Award-winning Latin restaurant brings immersive design and chef-driven cuisine to North Austin

Mexican Sugar Opens March 24 at The Domain
Austin, TX  (RestaurantNews.com)  Mexican Sugar will officially open at The Domain on Tuesday, March 24. Located at 11506 Century Oaks Terrace in North Austin, the restaurant will serve fresh, scratch-made Latin cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and an extensive collection of tequilas and mezcals.

“Austin has one of the most exciting dining scenes in Texas,” said Christine Magrann, President and COO of Mexican Sugar. “When guests walk into Mexican Sugar at The Domain, the design begins telling the story immediately. The artwork has a Frida Kahlo spirit that brings a sultry energy to the space, and the patio extends that feeling outdoors as a place where the neighborhood can gather.”

Mexican Sugar is known for its chef-driven menu and agave program, offering guests an opportunity to explore tequila, mezcal, and sotol through curated tastings and guided experiences. The menu focuses on fresh ingredients and traditional techniques with modern inspiration including hand-pressed tortillas made daily using heirloom masa.

Signature dishes include Chicken Mole, Angus Skirt Steak, and Barbacoa Tacos, along with larger plates such as the Bone-in Pork Chop and Spanish Mussels. Weekend brunch features dishes such as Cajeta French Toast, Benedictos Rancheros, Vanilla Cinnamon Pancakes, and Breakfast Americano, paired with margaritas, Cava mimosas, and Bloody Marias.

The design of the Austin restaurant reflects Mexican Sugar’s focus on cultural storytelling. A grand entrance with authentic Mexican clay tile leads guests into a space inspired by modern hacienda architecture. Warm leather seating, handcrafted tile, layered textiles, and wood beams create a setting that feels rooted in Latin design traditions. The open kitchen gives guests a front row seat to chefs preparing their signature dishes.

Metal artist Rae Ripple, known for her appearance on the Netflix series Metal Shop Masters, created custom lighting installations that serve as focal points throughout the restaurant.

On the exterior walls, Austin muralist Ruben Esquivel of East End Eclectic created a large-scale mural inspired by hand-formed clay textures and traditional Latin patterns. Hidden within the artwork are three birds representing the past, present, and future of Mexican Sugar.

The bar sits at the center of the restaurant and connects directly to the patio, creating a natural gathering place for guests. Designed to reflect Austin’s social energy, the expansive patio is an ideal setting for happy hours and open-air dining. Garage-style doors at the bar open onto the patio, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor experience. Custom shelving displays the restaurant’s extensive agave collection.

The restaurant spans almost 11,000 square feet, including the 1,770-square-foot patio. It will seat 330 guests, including a private dining space for up to 60 guests.

Mexican Sugar Austin will be led by General Manager Luke Wise and Executive Chef Yuval Ochoa, alongside Director of Operations Justin Beam. The restaurant operates under the leadership of FB Society CEO Jack Gibbons and President and COO Christine Magrann.

Mexican Sugar Austin will be open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Happy hour is offered Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., featuring discounted margaritas, frozen drinks, wines, sangrias, cervezas, and aperitivos.
