French 75

The French 75 is one of those cocktails I always seem to order when I’m out—it’s just so refreshing. Made with gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup, then topped with sparkling wine, it’s elegant yet incredibly simple to make: just shake the gin, lemon, and syrup with ice, strain into a glass, and top with bubbles. Cold, zippy, and exactly what you want at the end of the day.

The photo below shows a few of my friends and me on the beach in Naples during a recent girls’ getaway—French 75s were our unofficial happy hour ritual.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz gin
  • ½ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 3 oz chilled Champagne or sparkling wine
  • Lemon twist, for garnish (see note)

Instructions

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake well until chilled, about 10 seconds.
  • Strain into a champagne flute or coupe glass. Top with the Champagne.
  • Garnish with a lemon twist and serve immediately.

Notes

How to Make a Lemon Twist: Use a vegetable peeler or paring knife to cut a thin strip of lemon peel, avoiding most of the white pith. Twist the peel into a curl, rub it around the rim of the glass, and drop it into the drink.
For an S-shaped twist, cut a slightly longer strip of peel and gently shape it into an S with your fingers (or wrap it briefly around a bar spoon or straw to help it hold its shape) before placing it in the drink.
